![]() The Autumn Winter collection
Lightwood will now be available in red and black finished birch; two colors that will look good with the birch’s texture; and oak which is known for its bold wood grains. The new color finishes that have been applied thinly to the wood surface give an elegant look combined with the silhouette of the chair and lightly noticeable wood grains. It is graceful but still has an eye-catching existence.
Roundish chair will now be available with the cushioned seat, which creates a beautiful oneness with the wood. The fabric used is the same as that of Hiroshima, making it easy to match colors with both series. Elegant autumn-like textures such as the beautiful Belgian fabric with rich colors and refined ivory colored leather have been newly added. Now with the comfort of the cushioned seat, the new Roundish chair provides a more relaxed and comfortable sitting with its pleasant seat and back that fits to the body.

Hana by Toshiyuki Kita
Japan has a long history in the manufacturing of high quality porcelain, since 1630, even though during that time, Japan had a strict isolationist policy. In Dejima, a small island in the Bay of Nagasaki, there was a group of Dutch residents who exported large quantities of porcelain to Europe. This gave the entire area a cultural heritage and wealth which still remains today in the area of Arita (thus the location of the production of this series). In 2002, a group of seven Arita-yaki furnance operators asked Kita Toshiyuki (the well known designer of this series who happened to be the brain behind the Japan Creative Centre in Nasim Road) for advice on how to bring the porcelain to match their ancient splendour, when Arita-yaki was synonymous with the best in the world. Together with the descendants of the historical producers, the creation of the Hana crockery sets based around the design of an unusual 18th century plate is born. This series is to encourage people to use their imagination by playing on the coordination and the combination of the different shapes and sizes . atomi has recently signed an exclusive distribution and retail rights for MARUNI WOOD INDUSTRY INC. We are pleased to announce the partnership and will be showcasing their products in Feb 2010. In line with our mission to promote comfortable lifestyle and Japanese design, we hope to shape the standard of your future lifestyle through artwork.
"Furniture is a piece of artwork. A chair must be made so that the person sitting in it would look beautiful."
"Furniture has the power to brighten up not just the people using it, but also their whole lifestyle."
The products born from this project value the identity of Japanese furniture, a unique "made by Maruni" furniture will be fantastic for value preservations. Together with Maruni, we challenge ourselves to shape the standard of your future lifestyle.
Seeking for unchanging value, even in the changing times - one simple line sum it all up for atomi x maruni partnership. It is precisely the parts that embrace the whole. In Japan, it is the details that hold totality, details are not parts of the whole but embrace the whole itself.
Maruni first started out with a strong and beautiful bentwood chair. Those were literally days of challenge for the craftsmen, as they struggled to figure out how to industrialize/systemize the intricate techniques, which had only been made possible by handiwork. Their sense of mission to produce good furniture was what had supported the craftsmen at those hard times. This "craftsmanship mind" has been carried on for the full 80 years of Maruni's history. They continue to devote ourselves to improving our techniques, and to produce lifestyle furniture that would be cherished for a long period of time. Even when family structures or lifestyles change along with the times, Maruni will always be aiming at one goal - to make furniture with universal value. Seeking for unchanging value, even in the changing times. We have searched high and low for a good wooden chair that would be one whose essence seeped into our daily lives as it was used over time. With our "Japanese design x Comfortable lifestyle" belief, plain wood furnitures have been greatly featured in our boutique, that symbolise the warmth that one gets from handcrafted objects, rather than “design”. There is a subtle, exalted feeling of freshness, one that disallows any kind of impurity. What was aimed at with this chair and table was an image that was clean and subtle, while still having a human warmth to it. Thus we decided to bring in Maruni, especially the table and dining chair from the hiroshima series.
This series which we are bringing in is designed by Fukasawa is now available for viewing at atomi.
More about our partner - "Showa Bentwood Factory", established in 1928 was the forerunner of "Maruni Wood Industry Inc." which was established in 1933 has grown to be the top selling furniture manufacturer in Japan at that time. In the 1980's, Maruni was the first among competitors to launch the concept of "Total Coordination", as opposed to the conventional trend of selling furniture as a single item or as a combination set. Today, Maruni is laying the groundwork for further success, aiming at making furniture that are "people-friendly" and "earth-friendly", utilizing the techniques acquired from our history of 80 years.

Maruni Wood Industry / nextmaruni
atomi is proud to launch Nextmaruni armless chairs designed by SANAA, now available in various colours in Singapore! We are the exclusive distributor in Singapore, and you are one of the first to hear about it.
Maruni Wood Industry started up the Nextmaruni project in 2004. After serious deliberation, the following six colours were chosen among a huge selection of sample colours: Pink, Green, Yellow, White-Beige, Brown and Dark-grey. In collaboration with the chair’s adorable “rabbit” silhouette, each colour provides a new enjoyment and appeal to the chairs.
These same armless chairs are being used at the Serpentine Gallery in London for its temporary Pavilion of 2009 designed by SANAA. (Colours were especially prepared for this Pavilion)
